Welcome to the Telluride Mushroom Festival! You know the mushroom. But do you REALLY know its identity?
Monday June 9, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MDT
Welcome to the Telluride Mushroom Festival! This presentation will introduce you to a little bit of what to expect from the Festival ... and will introduce you to the kingdom of fungi. Fungi are weird, fungi are cool, and fungi are beautiful. But how much do we really know about them? For starters, they do much more than just rot things. They control pretty much all life on our planet and are everywhere. Discover the crazy, wonderful life that goes on all around us, mostly hidden in plain sight. This lecture is based on features from Bunyard’s new book, The Lives of Fungi, A Natural History of Our Planet's Decomposers

MycoGourds with Elder Joe Candia
The size of the group is limited to 25-30 gourd-holders and a facilitator. *Limited Capacity, signup required. Email Art Goodtimes Shroompa@gmail.com for participation

Modeled after the peer-to-peer sharing of graduate seminars, the MycoGourds concept was inspired by the work of Colorado deep ecologist Dolores LaChapelle and Brazilian socialist educator Paulo Freire. Dolores was a strong advocate of sharing circles for group decision-making and information-sharing -- as used in many traditions, both ancient and new (such as the Rainbow Family Gathering’s talking stick circles).

This sharing circle will be led by veteran facilitator of Indigenous ancestry Joseph Candia who specializes in contemplative dialogue. The theme for this peer-to-peer discussion will be self-healing with mushrooms.

A Natural and Cultural History of Magic Mushrooms in British Columbia, Canada (Limited Capacity)
All presentation in Transformation Studio are first come first serve. A line will be formed outside of Ah Haa for this presentation. There will be limited seats so please plan for a different event if this is full.

Magic mushrooms have been employed in spiritual practices in Mexico and Central America (and elsewhere) for millennia. The visionary powers of these mushrooms first became known to the world in 1957, and in the early 1960’s they sparked a social and cultural “psychedelic revolution” soon dominated by LSD. The discovery that magic mushrooms grew commonly and abundantly in the Pacific Northwest and in British Columbia helped make Canada’s westernmost province a focal point of social change. This presentation will explore the natural history of BC’s magic mushrooms, and their role in the rapidly changing counterculture of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and up to the present day.

Rocky Mountain Community Mycology: Mapping Fungi with DNA Together
Rapid advances in technology have made large-scale DNA sequencing possible for the first time ever in history. Community mycologists gathering in home laboratories are managing to sequence thousands of fungi in a single weekend. In 2023 alone, because of the diligence of collectors alongside the affordability and relative ease of sequencing, iNaturalist observations with ITS sequence data jumped 100-fold. In this talk, Mandie Quark will tour the audience through the community science labs, collaborations and workflows that are allowing this data to be produced at record speed, all free of charge to Colorado mushroom collectors. Cutting-edge methods, multidisciplinary research, and interesting species in the region will be highlighted. Within this creative presentation, Mandie intends to uncloak the mystery surrounding fungal DNA sequencing, and demonstrate its impact on biodiversity tracking far into the future.

Curry Punk & Jelly Brain – The Conservation & Aesthetics of Fungi
Monday June 9, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm MDT
The earth’s rapidly changing climate and environmental issues have come into sharp focus through the demise of charismatic megafauna and the "biodiversity crisis." But what about stinkhorns and slime molds? How do fungi and their kin get our attention when they are not only overshadowed by more ‘popular’ organisms, but are rarely included in our ideas about "nature" or "biodiversity?" Over the last 25 years Alison has divided her time between hemispheres, working both with fungi and their followers. She has been actively involved in fungal conservation and land restoration programs. In this talk Alison will explore how fungi are perceived across hemispheres in conservation contexts and which fungal flagships best capture the public imagination. Alison will also share some stories from the writing of her recent book, Meetings with Remarkable Mushrooms in which she interacted with fungi and their followers across a dozen countries.

Microscopy is an essential tool for the identification of microbes including fungi. Over the past few decades, the prices of very good quality compound microscopes can come way down, making it affordable for more and more “citizen scientists” to make use of this tool...but it does require some expertise. Dr. Amy Honan and her crew of experts (with decades of expertise) will instruct this completely hands-on course in basic microscopy. Bring your own mushrooms to examine...and even if you don’t, there will be fresh specimens on hand for everyone to use.

Workshop: Biochar Production
Biochar is black carbon produced from biomass sources [i.e., wood chips, plant residues, manure or other agricultural waste products] for the purpose of transforming the biomass carbon into a more stable form (carbon sequestration). Black carbon is the name of the range of solid residual products resulting from the chemical and/or thermal conversion of any carbon containing material (e.g., fossil fuels and biomass) (Jones et al., 1997).

The main purpose for the creation of biochar is for carbon sequestration. Biochar is speculated to have been used as a soil supplement thousands of years ago in the Amazon basin, where regions of fertile soil called "Terra Preta'" (dark earth) were created by indigenous people. Anthropologists hypothesize that inhabitants of the region produced biochar by practicing 'slash and char' management on vegetation to improve soil fertility and crop yields (Mann, 2005). Biochar application to soil has been the assumed end use for the created biochar. Even though biochar can be used in other purposes as long as the biochar is not used for fuel or energy. The burning of biochar would not achieve the goal of carbon sequestration since this would allow the carbon to return to the atmospheric pool where it originated before being fixed in plants by photosynthesis.

Morels (Morchella, spp) are one of the most iconic and sought after mushrooms in the world. Known for their elusive, camouflaged architecture and finesse for occupying very specific ecological niches in complex interkingdom biology makes them one of the most difficult to cultivate and reproduce at any scale. Recent developments and insights have provided many new clues and tips that can get you started in experimenting with outdoor morel cultivation in favorable climates. The process is very unique and unlike any other method of cultivating mushrooms, so come and see how morels are being cultivated commercially and adapt one of these methods to see if you hit the jackpot and crack the Morel code…

All presentation in Transformation Studio are first come first serve. A line will be formed outside of Ah Haa for this presentation. There will be limited seats so please plan for a different event if this is full.

This presentation begins a follow-up to Mr. Ravage’s 2019 lecture at the TMF “Towards
Industrial Scale Myco-remediation
”.
The results of that study, now published in the Summer 2024 issue of Fungi magazine, will
answer the questions initially posed: How effective can native wood rotting mushrooms be, at
the scale of hundreds of tons, in treating waste biomass? What are the differences, if any,
between commonly used wood-rotting mushrooms at rapid biomass decay?
We then move to other frontiers and some dead ends in myco-remediation. The roles of
fungi in the environment will be discussed and how they can both stabilize and de-stabilize
forest function. This sessions ends with a description of an ambitious cooperative undertaking
with soil scientists: the potential use of ancient mycorrhizal fungi to restore a divergent
grasslands overrun by cheatgrass.

Quattlebaum: Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger, brings more to the table than just music. With his infectious smile and weird antics, he brings people together; encouraging camaraderie and building community. The singer-songwriter, currently based in Bend, Oregon, tours the country picking and strumming indie-folk songs that are spacious and emotive, and have an implicit groove. When he plays, you can hear the reverberations of the rustic mountains clashing with the breezy ocean. Like a willowy heron, Quattlebaum struts around on stage as the music moves through him, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to longing.  He shares tender moments, where one can almost hear his banjo breathing, then erupts into raucous peaks of unbridled energy—his captivating solo performances take his audiences on a ride.

Stillhouse Junkies:
A crowd-thrilling trio from the hills of Colorado, Stillhouse Junkies share the kind of strangely charmed chemistry that elevates both artist and audience alike. Since forming in 2017, the Durango-bred band has offered up a hypnotic and high-energy form of roots music anchored in the free-flowing interplay among the three lifelong musicians (Fred Kosak on guitar and mandolin, Cody Tinnin on upright bass, Alissa Wolf on fiddle). While they’ve gained major traction in the bluegrass world in recent years—including winning the IBMA Momentum Band of the Year award in 2021—Stillhouse Junkies ultimately inhabit a genre-blurring and subtly inventive sound informed by everything from blues to classical to Texas swing. When matched with their nuanced songcraft and soul-stirring harmonies, the result is a one-of-a-kind musical experience that immediately transports the listener into a more enchanted state of mind.

With their fourth album due out in 2024, Stillhouse Junkies have now achieved such triumphs as touring in the UK and Europe and taking the stage at leading festivals like MerleFest and Grey Fox. Whether they’re performing at house concerts or playing to crowds of thousands, the band balances the dizzying intricacy of their musicality with plenty of freewheeling improvisation. “We make sure to leave a lot of wide-open spaces for group improv at our shows,” says Tinnin. “We’re not that interested in playing it safe; the goal is always to connect and play off each other as best we can.”
